Jean-Claude, you’re often mentioned as part of a new generation of UK electronic artists. How do you see yourself fitting into that narrative?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s an honor to be mentioned alongside the artists I respect, but I think what’s exciting about our generation is that we’re not trying to recreate what came before\u2014we’re building on it. The UK has this incredible electronic music heritage, from the Manchester warehouse scene to UK garage to dubstep. We grew up with all of that in our DNA, but we also have access to global influences and production tools that previous generations couldn’t imagine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you think makes UK electronic music distinctive in the global landscape?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s an emotional complexity to British electronic music that I think comes from our culture. We don’t just make music to make people dance\u2014though that’s important too\u2014we make music that acknowledges the full spectrum of human experience. Look at artists like Burial or Four Tet or even going back to Underworld. There’s always been this melancholic beauty threaded through the energy. That’s in my DNA as an artist.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your track “<\/strong>Summer Song<\/strong><\/a>” really captures that balance between euphoria and introspection. Is that conscious?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Absolutely. I think the best electronic music operates on multiple emotional levels simultaneously. ‘Summer Song’ is obviously celebratory\u2014it’s meant to capture those perfect festival moments when everything feels possible. But there’s also this underlying bittersweetness because you know those moments are temporary. That duality is very British, I think. We can’t just be happy\u2014we have to be happy with the awareness that happiness is fleeting.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you see the current UK electronic scene compared to previous generations?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What’s incredible now is the democratization of it all. In the ’90s, you needed access to expensive studios and equipment. Now, some of the most innovative music is being made in bedrooms across the country. That’s created this explosion of diversity and creativity that I don’t think we’ve ever seen before. Plus, social media and streaming platforms mean artists can build audiences directly without traditional gatekeepers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’ve built quite a following on<\/strong> <\/strong>SoundCloud<\/strong><\/a>. How important are these platforms for emerging UK artists?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Essential. SoundCloud especially has become like the underground radio of our generation. It’s where you test new ideas, get feedback from your community, discover new artists. Some of my closest collaborations have started from SoundCloud interactions. It’s kept that grassroots spirit alive even as the industry has become more globalized.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of collaboration, are there UK artists you’re hoping to work with?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’d rather not name names and create pressure, but there are definitely some incredible artists coming up alongside me. What I love about the current scene is how supportive it is. We’re not competing\u2014we’re building something together. There’s this understanding that we all rise together or not at all.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UK has always been known for spawning new electronic music genres. What do you think might emerge next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think we’re moving beyond genres, honestly. The next wave isn’t going to be a new genre\u2014it’s going to be more fluid, more genre-agnostic approaches that pull from everything. Climate change, social media, AI, global connectivity\u2014all of that is influencing how we make music. The artists who embrace that complexity rather than fighting it are going to create the most interesting work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your music often gets described as “cinematic.” Is that intentional?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Very much so. I think electronic music has matured to the point where we can create complete emotional experiences, not just functional dance music. ‘When We Loved<\/a>‘ was definitely conceived as a short film in audio form. British electronic artists have always been good at atmosphere and mood\u2014now we’re getting better at translating that into narrative structure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you balance staying true to UK electronic traditions while appealing to global audiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t think they’re in conflict, actually. The more authentically British I am in my approach\u2014the emotional complexity, the attention to atmosphere, the subtle humor\u2014the more it seems to resonate internationally. People can sense authenticity. They might not understand all the cultural references, but they can feel that it’s coming from a real place.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UK festival scene has exploded in recent years. How important is that for artists like yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Festivals are crucial because they’re where you test whether your music really works. Studio perfection is one thing, but can you move 10,000 people at 2 AM? That’s the real test. Plus, UK festivals have this incredible diversity now\u2014you’re not just playing to electronic music heads. You’re reaching people who might discover electronic music through your set.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“<\/strong>Break the Ground<\/strong><\/a>” feels particularly designed for those big festival moments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That track is my love letter to UK festival culture, honestly. I wanted to capture that feeling when the sun’s coming up, you’re surrounded by friends, and the music just lifts everyone together. It’s euphoric but not mindless\u2014there’s complexity there if you want to dig deeper. That’s very British festival culture to me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What challenges do UK electronic artists face that might not be obvious to outsiders?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Brexit has actually created some challenges for touring and collaboration within Europe that people don’t always consider. Also, London property prices mean a lot of artists are getting pushed out of the city, which changes the scene dynamics. But honestly, constraints often breed creativity. Some of the most innovative music is coming from artists who’ve had to find creative solutions to practical problems.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your<\/strong> <\/strong>YouTube channel<\/strong><\/a> showcases a lot of visual creativity alongside the music. How important is that multimedia approach?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s essential now. Electronic music has always been about creating experiences, not just songs. The visual component helps people understand the emotional world you’re creating. Plus, it’s another way to collaborate with other UK creatives\u2014filmmakers, visual artists, designers. That cross-pollination keeps the scene vital.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at streaming data, UK electronic music seems to be having a global moment. Why now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think the world is catching up to what UK electronic artists have always understood\u2014that dance music can be emotionally sophisticated and artistically ambitious without losing its power to move people. Plus, streaming algorithms don’t care about geography. Good music finds its audience now, regardless of where it’s made.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re just getting started, honestly. This generation of UK electronic artists is the first to grow up fully digital, fully global, fully aware of electronic music’s artistic potential. We’re not trying to prove electronic music is legitimate art\u2014we know it is. That confidence is going to produce some incredible music over the next decade.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That we’re creating a new chapter, not just recycling old ones. We respect our heritage, but we’re not trapped by it.
